From Puppies to Adults
After losing my first dog Rusty to cancer in 2004, I was really missing having a dog companion. Kosmo was found in a trash bin in Fresno. I was living in Santa Rosa at the time, and I drove to Fresno to adopt him. He was estimated to be about 10 weeks old, and I had no experience raising a young puppy. After losing my first dog Rusty to cancer in 2004, I was really missing having a dog companion. Kosmo was found in a trash bin in Fresno. I was living in Santa Rosa at the time, and I drove to Fresno to adopt him. He was estimated to be about 10 weeks old, and I had no experience raising a young puppy. Kosmo was such a handful as a little guy and my dog-training journey started with him. I learned so much about puppy-proofing, management, and working on behavior issues with Kosmo. He was specifically very reactive on the leash when encountering other dogs. Through working with Kosmo, I learned about reactivity, and it was satisfying to see him begin to enjoy his walks and feel confident.
Ten years ago I began fostering dogs because I couldn't stand the thought of innocent dogs being euthanized, and I had a particular soft spot for senior dogs, who were the least likely to be adopted or fostered. Kosmo was a wonderful balancing force for all dogs that I have adopted and fostered since. He was best friends with Madison, whom I adopted just months after bringing Kosmo home, and he was patient and gentle with the others who have come and gone through our house.
I was a shelter volunteer for two decades, and expanded my professional education into dog behavior by earning a professional certification (KPA-CTP, Fear Free, AKC CGC) in dog training.
I had the honor to have Kosmo as my companion for 19 years, and he crossed the rainbow bridge on Christmas Eve, 2023.
